Citadel

This is one of the best areas I’ve found in terms of concentration and quality with 52 problems and counting. It is short cliff band with very solid iron oxide features that make for interesting hand holds and body movement. There are three primary walls on both your left and right as you descend into a gully offering a choice of shade or sunshine at all times of day. It looks like there is a new horse trail being developed in the area so impact by climbers should be pretty low by comparison. The wall on your right (The Gymnasium) as you descend has probably 12-15 lines with lots of link-ups. The Pink Wall and the Grotto (on left as you drop into gully), together, have room for about 10-15 lines. Then, if you continue past the Gymnasium you pass the After Birth Cave and the Upper Cave which have about 8 or so steep lines.

The Citadel Backside is unique for the area, in that it offers a number of really fun boulders with legitimate topouts. There are facey technical problems, cracks, aretes, roof climbing, and some powerful slopey problems too. There is also a good bit of room for more first ascents in the V0-6 range with a few stray harder problems.

Dealing with horses: just a side note. There is a well trafficked horse trail that shares space with the climbing in this area. The horses can get a little skiddish around big crashpads, so if you see them coming try to move your pads out of the way so that the horses can pass, and head uphill from where the horses are walking. Horses typically run downhill when they are freaked out, and if you are downhill, this means you will be in its path.
